That is an amazing triumph to be able to come away from that upbringing with the wisdom and insight you have, and can share with us. I had a similar story, only was raised in the 80's. My parents picketed at my elementary school because my music teacher was having us sing "FAME" and "FOOTLOOSE". I remember the young beautiful, enthusiastic music teacher shaking like a leaf after my dad yelled at her about her use of "the devil's music". I choose to live by embracing the idea that who among us is right may continue to be one of those great mysteries until the end... likely NONE of us have the answer. I am glad that you recognize the danger in listening to the propaganda. Even if you don't believe what they are saying, they are so filled with self-righteousness it can be frightening to express your doubt in what they are saying. FAITH based religions, are by definition, CHOICE. FAITH is something someone has to choose, and you cannot get any more condescending than to treat another human as if they should be pitied because they do not choose to believe like you do. That's disgusting behavior. Jesus didn't roll like that and I won't either.
