I'm from Oklahoma as well, K. I'm also a former member of the Church of Christ. It wasn't a one-cupper, no Sunday-school, anti-fellowship hall church, but in all other respects, my congregation was just as conservative. However, at the age of 15 I started a period of self-exploration regarding many areas of my life, including religion. I found 3 types of evidence in my path towards atheism. The first was scientific (the evidence for evolution, i.e., the overwhelming amount of transitional fossils, microevolution, and vestigial organs, such as the appendix, in our own bodies), the second was philosophical (such as my self-formulated outline for the non-existence of an afterlife), and the third was the Bible itself (did you know that the gospels were written in the order Mark, Matthew, Luke, John, after Paul wrote the epistles? Paul never references any of the miracles of Christ, save the resurrection). Most Christians don't think Atheists have an open mind, and Atheist's minds, since they are guided by logic, reason, and science, are the most open of all! Do some research yourself, outside of the bible, and figure out why you believe what you do.

My story is similar to Eddie Owens. I also left the C.of C. at about 50 years of age after a 10 year search to find the "truth". I was seeing more and more inconsistancie in the church, and in the Bible, and went on a search. After discovering how the early Catholics twisted and embelished the story of Jesus, I decided the new testament must be errant. I had already decided the old testament was too illogical to be literally true. Then after a study of the history of God(s) and religion in general, I basically became an agnostic. I wasn't confronted by family and friends like Eddie, but it is obvious most of them think I am "out of the ball park". I was surprised no one even asked how I came to my conclusion. Too threatening I guess. I have written an 18 page "book" of my religious journey, Named, A SEARCH FOR TRUTH; OUT OF FEAR AND FUNDAMENTALISM if anyone is interested. It is okay to list my web site. Hang in there Eddie! J. Laney, Kansas

Well, this is the other side of the coin, isn't it? We of the Reason Based Community would like to see believers give up the silly baggage of organized religion. But when they do, they often find themselves caught up, by themselves, in an evangelical shit-storm. What then do we do? Tell them to tough it out and go on to the next de-conversion?Nice of you to take a stand for the guy and lend some much needed support. I'll follow your link back to him and let him know that I too support him in his quest for a rational second half of his life.Good job.
